It’s that time of year again. Where the days get shorter and the sun goes to bed early. Anyone else feel like they feel a slight seasonal depression every year? I definitely do! I always feel more productive early in the morning or when the sun is still up so when the work day is still going but it’s dark outside, I instantly feel less productive. All I want to do is lay around and watch holiday TV and eat snacks haha. Plus, we usually have a lot of rain and snow in late Fall and Winter which makes so many days so dark and dreary.

So what do I do to get out of this funk?! Keep reading!

Below I’ve listed some things I do to perk up my spirit when I’m feeling the late Fall & Winter blues. You all might laugh at some of these or totally understand. I know some of them sound silly but this is the honest truth lol. Obviously, some of these aren’t for everyone but finding those small things that give you a boost to finish out the day strong can make all the difference.

1 // Change your outfit + get cleaned up. You’re probably thinking “huh?” haha so let me explain. Now that I work from home it is REALLY easy for me to stay in my pj’s or lounge clothes all day long with hair that hasn’t been brushed in a crazy topknot, and an unwashed face. It’s a simple concept but I’ve noticed lately when I’m feeling anxious, unmotivated, or defeated if I stop what I’m doing, put on a clean, cute change of clothes (even if it’s just different loungewear), wash my face and apply my fav skincare products, I feel like a new person. Oh… and a brush and a little dry shampoo also help lol!

Really it comes down to self-care. I’m sure we all have those days where we just don’t feel like going through all the steps it takes to wash & dry our hair, style our hair, clean our face properly, self-tan, moisturize, get our lashes done, nails filled, etc. Boy! It’s all exhausting! BUT with that said, I do notice if I quit making excuses and pull myself together each day, put in a little more effort to feel presentable, I have a much more productive day and it seriously helps with the seasonal blahs. Because a more productive day means a day that ends earlier which means more holiday movies on Hallmark (and candy)!

2 // Plan activities you can get excited about. Something else that gets me more excited about October, November, December, and January is the holidays! There are so many fun things to plan for and to think about when you’re feeling blue. Halloween parties, Thanksgiving break, Black Friday shopping (yesss!), Christmas time with family & friends, travel, and more. I like to take a look at my planner when I’m having a rough week and count down the days to the next fun event or family gathering. It’s a great way to put each day into perspective. They are only 24 hours so they won’t last forever. If today is blah then look forward to tomorrow, and the next day!

Speaking of planning, I use a paper planner from Erin Condren that I look forward to decorating and writing in every single day. I’ve seriously always been this way. I’m one of those people who thinks shopping for office supplies is a total treat haha! So even when I know a stressful or jam-packed week is coming, I look forward to planning it all out. Because having a plan alleviates so much of my daily anxiety. If I let myself get overwhelmed and behind, it just makes me want to shut down. I even went out recently and bought several packs of fun planner stickers so make every day look fabulous lol so when I open my planner, no matter the day, it brings a smile to my face.

3 // Light a candle and/or turn on extra lights. This one may seem obvious, but if the darkness outside creates a blue mood, then inside darkness absolutely will too. Justin always jokes with me that I always have every single light turned out and I think it’s because it makes me feel happy, safe, and awake. I always shake my head in movies or TV shows where everyone is always in the dark or working by the light of their laptop… I mean come on now! No way, Jose!

As many of you know, I’ve been decorating for Fall since the end of Summer and have had quite the time collecting pumpkins and pillows and throws. I even put a light up jack-o-lantern and some string lights next to our fireplace and every night I look forward to turning them on when it gets dark outside. It makes me feel cozy and at home, and it gives me a reason to look forward to the end of the day. Justin laughs because I’ve been insisting we eat dinner in the dark by the light of the pumpkin and string lights because I love them so much haha!

4 // Turn on Christmas Music. Alright, I know some of you are like “Seriously, Amanda, it’s mid-October!” But hey, you do what works, and Christmas music makes me feel SO much better. I look forward to the first Christmas song on the radio every single year, only play the station in my car that is 24/7 Xmas, and even keep it going in my office on Spotify or Pandora. Now, let me clarify, I haven’t actually started listening to Christmas tunes yet because I do like to have something to look forward to lol, but I definitely won’t be waiting until December!

If it’s not Christmas, then play what works for you – music can do wonders for your mood. Instantly, you can get a little pep in your step and a renewed vigor to keep at it. Whether it’s getting stuff done around the house, finishing up a school project, reconciling bills, you know, all the fun things. I usually turn on Spotify (currently I’m tuned to Khalid) during my mid day slump. Where I feel my energy draining and my motivation failing. I like to stop, make myself a coffee and a snack, and turn on some music to finish out my day.

5 // Eat a sweet treat! Lastly, if all else fails, treat yo’ self! Sometimes pumpkin pie M&M’s just do the trick. Reward yourself for a hard days work or a day that didn’t go just right, or to satiate those seasonal blues. If anything, the holidays are a time to look forward to good food and delicious desserts. I actually requested rice krispy treats for Thanksgiving haha – fun fact: they are my favorite dessert… I use to ask for them instead of cake for my birthday.

Have a fabulous Monday!
