Welcome back Monday! I’m so excited to share today’s post with you. Not only does it include fab items from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, but it’s a new edition of Motivation Monday. I thought since we’ve been talking a lot of sale and shopping that I’d talk about cleaning out. I know fall is still a while away but it’ll be here before you know it. Now is the perfect time to start weeding out your closet(s). Especially if it means filling wardrobe holes with new fall items at great prices

If you’ve been following me long or you know me personally, you know I love to organize, and often. A clean and organized space helps me to create a clean and organized mind. I’m always finding better ways to store things in the house and am always donating and selling because I hate to have things I don’t need or use. Most people would probably think I have a ton of clothing and shoes but I really don’t. I’m quite the minimalist. Below are my ten pearls of wisdom for cleaning out your closet.

btw… my black tote still needs to be restocked but I’m loving this one, this one, and this one

1. Make a cup of coffee. So before we get to cleaning let’s make a cup of coffee. You might need to jolt of energy, it might take a long time, and hey, coffee makes everything better!
2. Take everything out. When I’m cleaning out the first thing I do is take everything out. In this case, I don’t necessarily pull everything out of the closet that’s hanging, but I do pull everything out of seasonal storage and put it on to the floor. Items that are hanging I go through first, pulling out items I know or think I don’t want anymore. The reason I do this is so only the items I REALLY want go back into the closet or into storage.
3. Make piles. Once you’ve got everything out in the open I suggest making three piles. One for KEEP, one for GET RID OF, and one for MAYBE. This way everything will have its own space and you can see the effort you’re putting in. I like to have a maybe pile because you could spend all day deciding on pieces you’re not sure about and it’s easier to quickly place them in the “maybe” and spend the time deliberating later.

4. Ask yourself if you love it. After you’ve got your piles in order go ahead and head back to your MAYBES. This is the time where you hold up each item you’re unsure about and ask yourself if you love it. Does it bring you happiness? Have you worn it in the past six months? Did you wear it last year if it’s a seasonal piece? Does it fit you? This should help you to sort everything out. If you’re still not sure just set them aside and come back to it later.

5. Make note of the holes. Now that you know what you have you can make a list of what you need. I did this before the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale so I wouldn’t buy anything redundant and I would put my money to good use. I especially look for staples like denim, boots, leggings, sweaters, jackets, etc. Items that usually come at a higher price point I can get at a discount now. To find out what all I purchased, check out my Purchases tab.

6. Create a color palette. Another thing I did this year, in addition to finding the holes in my wardrobe, was to create a color palette. This might sound strange but it’s seriously helpful! Then when you shop you’ll quickly say “yes” or “no” to things you find. My color palette now consists of blush, white, cream, grey, black, and a little bit of light blue and navy. It makes creating outfits much easier since everything is cohesive. I suggest adding several neutrals so mixing and matching is quick!

7. Standardize your hangers. I’m a little (okay a lot) OCD so another thing I do when I organize and clean out is to standardize my hangers. In my closet, I have all pink velvet hangers. And on my clothing rack, I purchased beautiful white wooden hangers from IKEA (since they are more for looks). The velvet hangers are great because they are thin and clothes don’t slide off of them. It helps to create a streamlined look and will make you love your clothes that much more.

8. Organize your storage. Once you have everything folded and hanging in your closet (btw I use a hanging organizer from IKEA for my purses, and jeans to save space, and shoe organizers that hang on either end of my closet) I suggest finding somewhere to keep your items that are out of season. We don’t have much room at our house so I purchased three under bed storage containers (super affordable) that sit at the foot of my closet stacked on top of one another. They are such a good size and even hold my winter coats and blanket scarves. Plus, they have zippers making getting in and out easy. Or if you’re lucky enough to have a spare closet, I’d isolate everything there.

9. Donate & Sell. Now you can take your GET RID OF pile and decide what is worth selling (I always sell at local consignment), what needs to be donated, and what you can throw away. Many times I’ll take my items to consignment first, and whatever they don’t take I drive to a donation center.

10. Go shopping! Now that you’re closet is clean, organized, and waiting for new merchandise, you can go shopping! I know saying it is probably like beating a dead horse at this point lol but the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is the best time to purchase for fall because they have new items at discounted prices (that go back up on August 6th). You can find my favorites under $50, top selling products, and my purchases. Happy shopping!
